John Fergusson's Crew
As recited by a lumberjack and taken down for the editor by a student of the University of Maine, 1916.
1 There once was a man
In Howland did dwell; His name was John Fergusson; You all know him well.
2 He had a small crew
Upon Meadow Brook. He was always a-rowing With the crew and the cook.
3 The first cook he drove
Was Llewellyn Bean; The next was John Brown, Who would n't keep the camp clean.
4 Their supplies in the winter
Was beans and codfish, And a roll of old butter That would n't stay in the dish.
5 The codfish and beans
Took the place of fresh meat; And the butter was strong enough To walk on the street.
6 Put a piece on the table
It would begin to walk round, And it took a cord of rock maple To hold the thing down. |
